Frequently Asked Questions about the NNMC

If our list of FAQ's does not provide the information you are looking for, please contact our Information & Sales Representatives.

Is There Any Software To Install?
No, the NNMC is a fully managed service. All active monitoring is initiated through software mounted on highly resilient server clusters installed at our monitoring centre.
Some passive monitoring services may require software to be installed on your servers.

What Can I Monitor?
The NNMC can monitor:
  Any network device.
  Any UDP or TCP service.
Critical application events via our bespoke server-side plug-ins.
Resource utilisation (bandwidth, % CPU, % memory, free disk space, %     swap, users, etc).
  System event logs.

What Is The Difference Between An Active And A Passive Test?
Active tests are initiated from the NNMC. For instance, network paths and nodes are tested using 'PING', whilst software services are proactively monitored.
Passive tests use server-side plug-ins which monitor applications, notifying the NNMC of status changes.

Is There A Limit To The Number Of Tests I Can Perform?
No, you can specify as many active and passive tests as you wish.

What Else Can I Test For?
If we can stimulate a response from a network device then we can monitor it. We can also pattern match log files allowing you to monitor system and application activity. This is done using our extensive library of plug-ins.

What Is A Plug-In?
A plug-in is a small piece of software that runs on the server and allows us to monitor components and processes that are not 'network aware'. Examples of these include CPU utilisation, disk usage and application activity.

What If I Want To Test Something For Which You Have No Plug-In Available?
We can write the plug-in for you. Contact us for further details.

What Happens If The Monitoring Server Fails?
Monitoring is performed from server clusters configured to have 100% hardware and software redundancy. This ensures 24 x 7 x 365 availability.

Does Monitoring Degrade Network Performance?
The low load of the NNMC software means that the performance of most networks will not be noticeably affected.

How Long Before I Can Be Up And Running?
Once you have decided what you want to monitor and test, we will map your network and have it ready for testing within hours.

How Do I View My Network?
Through a secure, password protected web interface.

How Do I Add/Remove Devices And Tests From The NNMC?
You can request changes via an on-line form. The change request is verified by NNMC staff and added to your profile and will be activated within 24 hours.

How Does The NNMC Notify Me Of Problems On My Network?
The NNMC can notify you of problems via SMS text messaging, alphanumeric pager, e-mail, or a combination of all three.

Is There Any Escalation Process In Notifications?
Yes, from initial notification there are 2 further levels of problem escalation which can be defined on request.

Can I Turn Off Monitoring To Carry Out Scheduled Maintenance?
Yes, you can turn off monitoring on a device for any length of time via your NNMC Control Panel. The NNMC automatically calculates which 'downstream' devices are affected by maintenance.

Can I Trigger An Action On A Network Device Or Failing Service?
Yes. This is known as an event handler. You can trigger any action on a device or failing service. For example you could restart a web or mail service, bring a backup web server online or automatically clean up temporary files in the event of a hard disk reaching critical levels of drive space used.

Can I Join The NNMC Partner Program?
Yes. Simply use the Info Request Page to register your interest and we will contact you to discuss this opportunity.
